Eddie Hughes was born in Birmingham. The son of a bus driver and cleaner, he went to school in north Birmingham before studying Civil Engineering at the University of Glamorgan.
Eddie has been the Member of Parliament for nearby Walsall North since 8th June 2017, but recent changes by the Boundary Commission to balance the number of voters in each constituency have abolished his constituency by splitting it into three separate parts.
On Sunday 18th June 2023 (a very memorable Father's Day for Eddie!) Tamworth Conservatives selected Eddie Hughes as their candidate for the next General Election.
Eddie is a diligent and hardworking local MP and also served as a Government Whip, Minister for Rough Sleeping and Housing and is now a Vice Chair of the 1922 Committee. This broad range of experience will be invaluable in championing the needs and concerns of local people across Tamworth and the local villages, both here and on the green benches in Westminster.
Eddie said: "I am tireless in my efforts to deliver investment and much-needed infrastructure for local residents. After a relentless campaign which began in 2018, I managed to secure £36m of funding for a new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre for my local hospital. It gave me a tremendous sense of achievement to attend the official opening just last week. I've also secured £13m to re-open a town centre train station, £23.5m of Towns Fund and £20m of Levelling Up. This funding will be transformational, helping people to travel more easily for work, education and leisure, providing high-quality housing and improving local recreation facilities."
Eddie was previously Deputy Chief Executive of a local charity which provides accommodation for young people at risk of homelessness and is a trustee of the Walsall Wood Allotment Charity, which helps people in financial need.
Eddie was a councillor in Walsall for nearly 20 years and held several positions on the council including the decision-making cabinet, and chairman of Children’s Services Scrutiny and Audit committees. Eddie also served on the West Midlands Police Authority and was Chairman of Walsall Housing Group.
Eddie owns a house in Stonydelph with his wife Clare and has two grown-up children.
